RELEASE: Wharton Bill Honoring Navasota Sergeant Mark Butler Advances to Governor

Austin, TX – House Bill 3510, authored by State Representative Trey Wharton (HD 12), passed both
chambers of the Texas Legislature unanimously and is now awaiting the signature of Governor Greg
Abbott. The bill designates a portion of State Highway 6, between College Station and Navasota, as the
“Sergeant Mark Butler Memorial Highway” in honor of the fallen Navasota, Texas police officer.

Sergeant Mark Butler tragically lost his life in the line of duty on January 15, 2025, while responding to a
police pursuit as a fleeing suspect drove the wrong way on the highway at high speeds.

Sergeant Butler served nearly four years with the Navasota Police Department and was a veteran of the
United States Army. He is remembered for his unwavering commitment to protecting others and is
survived by his wife, Evette Fannin Butler, and their two young sons, Elias and Ezra.

“This designation will serve as a symbol of the sacrifice Sergeant Butler and his family made in order to
protect others,” said Representative Wharton. “Every driver who travels this highway will be reminded
of the courage and dedication it represents. He gave everything to protect this community – it is our
duty to honor him.”

The Texas Department of Transportation will place memorial signs at both ends of the designated
stretch of State Highway 6, and at appropriate locations along the route. Funding for the creation and
installation of the signage will come from private community-raised funds.

Once signed by the Governor, the law will take effect on September 1, 2025.
